1900s it was believed to compensate the cold water at the beach, women preferred warmer fabrics and wore their beach suits in wool or flannel made of up to 9 yards, ‘which is the modern-day bath robe’. Bikini, the outfit originally weren’t for swimming!

Bathing beauties at the turn-of-the-century

The only activity for women in the ocean involved jumping through the waves, holding on to the ropes.

This fashion changed and many women athletes’ started to share the actual sport of swimming with men between 1915 and 1920s. Introduction of comfortable fabric to suit the need become the trend, though matching stockings were still worn, swimsuits began to shrink and more flesh was exposed.

Also, in 1920s women were subjected to “swim-suit police”, who measured length of their swimsuits!

French Designer Louis Reard introduced the modern Bikini to the world in 1946.

As years rolled around, the demand for them grew larger and the fabric for the swim suits got smaller.

Vogue and Hollywood both popularized the idea of swimwear being sexy and glam and also a trend to wear a ‘swim suit’ has been set in all International Beauty contests.

As the fabric got reduced in the suit, a variety of industry accompanied the popularity, one of which is swim suit photography!

  1. ‘Sports Illustrated’ has set the standard for what a swimsuit model should be. For a magazine that has that much influence to include models of different body types on their pages shows that they’re breaking down old beauty ideals while opening the doors of diversity and inclusivity.🥰

  2. Superb….
Beach wear is a fashion thing to watch out 😎 indeed, but there is so much history, and so much to it even if it’s sized more or less.
Different shapes, curves (to the garment) and cut that define it and the way it’s worn….. Glam quotient is about what and how it’s worn.
Sun sand and sizzling beachwear always a good sight to see 😁.
